|The Rise and Fall of Mies van der Rohe|
Event Type: Adult Services|
Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Time: 3:30 PM
Architectural historian Tim Wittman returns. Mies, advocate for innovation in design, director of the Bauhaus in Germany, and blacklisted by the Nazi party for his dismissal of tradition had an international reputation as a preeminent architect. When he emigrated he chose Chicago, where he could further his career by melding European Modernist aesthetics with American engineering excellence. The style he advocated was at first exciting, then taken for granted, and eventually abandoned. Wittman will discuss his meteoric rise, success, and fall from favor, and see how his work sowed some of the seeds of its own demise.
