Description
Join us for an afternoon with author and artist Javaka Steptoe, who is this year's winner of the highest honor for children's picture books - the Caldecott Medal. He will talk about his recent book, "Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat" which also won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award. A book signing will follow.

Doors open at 1:30 pm for refreshments and book sales. Jane Addams Book Shop will be on site selling Javaka Steptoe's books.

Celebrate a new exhibition in the library's "The Art Connection: Schools to Library" series with kids, teens, and art teachers from three Champaign schools: Centennial High School (Stacey Gross), Jefferson Middle School (Scott Fernsberg), and Carrie Busey Elementary School (John Odum). The exhibition is on display in two areas. Be sure to visit both the children's area on the first floor and the FriendShop Bookstore (elevator to lower level). On display through December. Next exhibition in series opens in January 2018. Made possible with support from the Library Friends.

Musician Sean Gaskell learned to play the kora, a 21-string harp native to West Africa, during numerous visits to its native country, Gambia. Kora music is part of the oral tradition, and celebrates the history of the Mandinka people of West Africa. Sean will perform songs on the kora and discuss its history and cultural significance in this program for all ages.
