Steve Stone was an average pitcher at best when he arrived in Baltimore in 1979. He had toiled for both the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs without much fanfare and came to Baltimore with a lifetime losing record. Then the 1980 season began. After starting the campaign at 2-3, Stone won 14 straight decisions. Making his only All-Star game appearance, he started the game and retired all nine National League hitters.
He set the Orioles club record for wins in a season (25), a record that still stands. Stone was the lone 25-game winner of the 1980s and won the Cy Young Award. And you thought he was just another baseball announcer. Bill Pemstein is a local sportswriter and former employee of the Baltimore Orioles baseball club. He lives in Lake Zurich.
